The focus now turns entirely on Iowa Western for the eighth-ranked Iowa Central football team.
Making their fall debut inside Dodger Stadium here Saturday, the Tritons swarmed Gordon Fine Arts and Sports Academy, 84-6.
Iowa Central (3-0 overall) now prepares for a showdown with the Reivers back here next Sunday at noon.
“We came into this game looking to stay sharp and get through it healthy,” Iowa Central head coach Jesse Montalto said. “We knew it would be like this, but I was proud of the guys for focusing in and taking care of business. We got a lot of kids in and we saw some exciting things from younger guys who haven’t had a chance to play.
“Now, though, we know it gets tougher and we have to be ready to match Iowa Western when they come here.”
The Tritons scored on their first 11 drives of the opening 30 minutes, including six first quarter touchdowns. Byron Jarrett played just those possessions, accounting for four passing scores and a rushing one.
Jarrett was 10-for-13 passing for 143 yards with 55 yards rushing on three carries. He hit Aniik McKenzie on two of those throws for TDs and also connected with Daylen Boddie and Jalen Harris.
“Byron came in and looked ready to go,” Montalto said. “He was efficient and poised in the pocket, showing how much he has progressed already this season. He has really taken on a strong leadership role for this program.”
Zach Marker came on in the second quarter and led five more scoring drives. Marker was 3 of 7 for 76 yards with a touchdown to Carson Hilsenbeck while also showing off his running skills with 81 yards on six carries including two scores.
“I just love how Marker competes,” Montalto said. “He’s a little different kind of quarterback than Byron is, but he showed just how exciting he can be with the ball in his hands.”
Cayne Smith ran for 104 yards and a score with Harmon Miller finding Izaiah Haslett for a touchdown in the second half. The final two quarters were shortened to six minutes each.
On defense, Kenny Givens had two sacks, Demetrios Walker and Dalton DeWitt had one each, and the Tritons forced five turnovers. Deion Coleman, Dominic McMillian and Deonte Bryant recovered fumbles, with Bryant Barrier and Lejuan Miller picking off passes.
“The defense just continues to make plays,” Montalto said. “Now, though, we have to be ready for the toughest test we’ve faced to date. Before the season started, Iowa Western was the game we had marked to find out what kind of team we have.”
